Cherry Tomatos

Cherry tomatoes are a smaller variety of regular tomatoes, and are consumed mainly as a snack or in salads. They are bite-sized (somewhere between a grape and a golf ball) and contain more sugar than regular tomatoes.

Cherry tomatoes, which are botanically considered as fruit, originated in Peru, though the most popular kinds are now derived from the Israeli innovation – the tomaccio. The tomaccio was developed in order to create a tomato that can withstand Israel's hot climate, thanks to a slowed-down rapid ripening that provides a longer shelf life.

Avniv grows tomaccios in sun-filled sites, perfect for cherry tomatoes and can package them in retail packages or in bulks. The company exports two kinds of tomaccios – round loose cherry tomatoes and baby plum cherry tomatoes. Both are firm and smooth-skinned, have a shiny red color and are resistant to Ty virus. The plum cherry tomato is also known as grape tomato.

A cherry tomato is a great source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Magnesium, Potassium and the powerful natural antioxidant lycopene. It is also rich in Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Niacin, Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Copper and Phosphorus. Overall, cherry tomatoes are low in Sodium, Saturated Fat and Cholesterol.
